Poem : I Still Remember

I Still Remember
Irie Salvador

I remember
-your death
I remember
-as if only yesterday
I remember
-etched in my mind
-details so clear
I remember
Only five
But I remember
I remember
I often wonder what my life would be
-who I would be
-if you hadn’t left
You left Mami
You left me
As if only yesterday
I remember
How can anyone forget?
How you left
-I remember
The little girl standing
She looks towards the place
-the trees
-the tree you hung
-hung your body from
I remember
Holy Water over a white sheet
I remember
-white sheet covering a body
-your body
I remember
I didn’t cry
I just walked around
I remember
I didn’t cry
I just watched
-Mami crying next to a box
-a box with your body
I remember
You left Mami
You left me
I often wonder what my life would be
-who I would be
-if you hadn’t left
-Mami & me
The scent of death still lingers
I still remember
