Poem : The Lovers, Lest We Forget

the lovers, lest we forget
 by trevor maynard

just because
she said
i am sitting alone on the beach
and reading a magazine
that doesn’t mean
you can sit down uninvited

i realize that
he replied
that is why I did not seek an invitation
i just approached you
and asked you
to marry me

for one summer
they remember
a blanket down on the grassy dune
a lull in the squadron noise overhead
joy to the world
the creation of their son

sixty years on
we can report
beneath the clock tower built to commemorate
the bravery of those who fought against hate
she sits with us, her family,
and watches the sea, alone in memory

A wife remembers her husband who died in WW2, a war in which over 75 million people died in, over two thirds of whom were civilians.  23 million in Russia, 20 million in China, 6 million Jews in the Holocaust; half a million people in the UK, half a million in US, and 8 million Germans.  All of these people had parents, most had siblings, and many had children.
