Writing Better When Lost In Reverie
Can Listening to Soothing Music Induce Writing Mood?

By Shakti Pherwani

There’s a reason this website (in spite of being called Downright Fiction) features music alongside the writing content. It all ties in with a larger theory that sound has a way of influencing us just as deeply as visuals, images and words.

The moving image allows us to perceive a running picture; paintings connect with our subconscious (and our intellect) –but what about the smoothly transitioning melody and the emotion it evokes?

We hear so much about the importance of the background score of a film (it is even said that fifty percent of the film’s impact comes from the audio component!) – so can it be possible that the same can help create better writing worlds?

We always talk about the muse visiting when we’re filled with inspiration to write, paint, draw or design with channeled creativity – but does all inspiration come from the same unseeable, uncontrollable, intangible resource –and is it always limited ?

How much of what you create is self-driven; and how much a product of practice making perfect?

As writers transition to authors, you tend to learn to have more control (well, almost) over your writing habits and rituals – you find the right spots and the right times to work on your many, many rewrites. You even figure out ways to hack out of writer's block and at a certain point in your career, you may even know the right spots that reinvigorate your passion and put away those feelings of uncertainty.

But for those still figuring out what works and how to channel all that creativity – we ought to still be out in the hills trying on the many hats and find out which one fits best to undo that feeling of scrambled brain!

I recently stumbled upon this beautiful composition titled 'Arcadia's Lullaby'  by Andy Sikorski that got me thinking: can music help create the worlds in our writing more accurately? Can we get lost in sound and translate what we feel and see in our mind's eye - and render the same magical feeling into the written word?

What do you think? Would you consider soothing music (or any kind of music for that matter!) as one of your go-to resources that help you center yourself? Or do you think that you need the chaos in your head to write more intuitively?

It is being said that the date of 11.11.11 is to bring new energies into our universe and so in honour of the new cycle let this be a new source of inspiration to us all!

Thanks for being with Downright Fiction.  Keep living the dream!
